Alpha-Protein enables the automated, scalable and cost-efficient rearing of insets as food and feed by developing automated systems. As a result, Alpha Protein enables the use of insects as sustainable and price competitive protein source.
Which input provides your business model/core technology towards a bio-based economy?
The food industry produces many by-products which are not further used and go to waste. Those by-products can be transformed into a mix rich of proteins, unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals by our mealworms. The mealworms are a sustainable protein source and allow a full substitution of fish meal and soy in feed with only a fraction of CO2 emission, land and water use.
Which market/clients do you address and which short-/long-term goals do you have?
The target groups of Alpha-Protein’s main product (insect meal) are segmented into feed, pet food and food manufacturers. The feed and pet food markets are much more attractive as initial markets than the food market due to higher volumes, new EU regulations and less psychological barriers. In addition, the markets are becoming established and the products also have added functional value.
What makes your approach unique compared to other stakeholders in this field?
Decisive for the unique position of Alpha-Protein are 3 aspects: The price, the quality and the high sustainability standards of production. With the help of the new production process, Alpha-Protein is able to scale the production of mealworms to a higher, almost fully automatable production capacity, which is necessary to achieve a with fishmeal competitive price due to the economy of scale.
