Which input provides your business model/core technology towards a bio-based economy?

At Better Nature, we are the world’s first food-tech company focused on tempeh fermentation and innovation. Using our proprietary starter cultures and processing methods, we make plant-based protein without compromise – delicious, nutritious and all-natural, just as it should be!

Which market/clients do you address and which short-/long-term goals do you have?

Since launching in January 2020, we are now listed in over 200 independent retailers and are currently in discussions with the UK’s largest multiples. We are consistently a top 4 best-selling vegetarian protein brand on Amazon UK and have a returning customer rate of 38%+ on our D2C website. We’ve also launched in foodservice and have a listing with Bidfood – one of the UK’s largest foodservice distributors. Our ambition is to bring tempeh into the mainstream to fulfil our simple mission: to create foods that are better for people and better for the planet.

What makes your approach unique compared to other stakeholders in this field?

Currently, the market is full of ultra-processed meat alternatives that taste like meat but have extremely long ingredient lists full of unrecognisable ingredients such as methylcellulose. When health is the primary driver of the reduction of meat consumption by consumers, it seems that what the market is currently offering is certainly not what consumers are looking for.

As the world’s first and only company focused on tempeh fermentation, we believe we are in a unique position to leverage this biotransformative process to produce meat alternatives that consumers are looking for – delicious, nutritious, and all-natural.
