Which input provides your business model/core technology towards a bio-based economy?
Biorefinergy generates energy and chemicals from renewable raw materials. Valorization of side streams of biorefinery is critical when the overall economics are considered. Green premium cannot guarantee the success of bio-based materials. Functionality of the biobased materials as well as the cost of manufacturing are important factors for the successful operation of biorefinery. Lignum’s Biofillers meet the requirements of valorization of side streams, cost-effectiveness and high performance of the biobased plastic composites. Lightweight and renewable biocomposites from Lignum’s Biofillers have been applied in automotives as well as consumer products. Our technology and product can be more competitive when partners in forest industry join in our common endeavor to realize the future mobility.
Which market/clients do you address and which short-/long-term goals do you have?
Lignum’s biofillers and mastertaches are targeting the interior and exterior parts of vehicles. Energy efficiency is realized through the lightweight automotive parts and low carbon foot print is achieved through renewable raw materials and simple manufacturing process of Lignum. Lignum’s Biofiller has superior properties to conventional wood powder, and our innovative materials and applications build upon those unique properties of Biofillers. Without sacrificing mechanical properties, Lignum’s lightweight and cost-competitive Biofillers can offer brand owners and material processors with various opportunities to manufacture lightweight products with aesthetic surface and haptics. Applications include interior and exterior parts of vehicles, apiculture, electronic appliances and much more. Lignum’s biofillers can increase environmental sustainability. Biofillers show excellent dispersion, MI, and surface properties in the processes of extrusion and injection molding. Masterbatches of polypropylene or ABS mixed with Biofillers (up to 60%) can be supplied to the processors of extruders and injection molders. In short-term Lignum will build the demo plant by 2022 and full plant by 2024.
What makes your approach unique compared to other stakeholders in this field?
Lignum’s biofillers do not undergo any chemical treatment. Still, they can be mixed with conventional plastic resins like PP, PE, PS, and ABS. Also Lignum’s biofillers can be processed with other renewable bioplastics to adjust the biodegradability. Lignum’s biofillers can be produced from raw materials like sawdust and biorefinery waste streams having lignocellulosic biomass.
