Dr Stefanakis is Assistant Professor at the School of Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete in Greece. He is also Regional Coordinator for Africa and Middle East for the ‘Wetlands for Water Pollution Control’ Specialist Group of the International Water Association. He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal ‘Circular Economy and Sustainability’, and Associate Editor of the journal ‘Environmental Science and Pollution Research’. He is an Environmental Engineer and Researcher focusing on water engineering and specifically on nature-based solutions and ecological engineering. He is an Expert on sustainable and decentralized water and wastewater treatment systems. He has designed, managed, and constructed several wastewater treatment facilities across Europe, Middle East, Africa, USA and South America. In the past, he worked as Researcher and Lecturer at the University of Brighton, UK, the University of Beira Interior, Portugal, the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research – UFZ, Germany, and the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece. His publication record includes articles in international scientific journals and conference proceedings, as well as three books and several book chapters.

Yvette is Senior Investment Manager at Capricorn Partners and key manager for the Capricorn Sustainable Chemistry Fund. She has been active in sustainable investments since 2008, having invested in sustainable energy technology companies at SET Ventures and in positive impact funds as the Head of Social and Environmental Impact at the European Investment Fund. She started her career with 10 years at Royal DSM and Shell International Chemicals in roles which include product development, purchasing, sales and global product portfolio management for various performance materials and chemicals. Yvette holds a Master of Business Administration from IESE Business School (Spain) and a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Delft University of Technology (Netherlands).

ADRIANO DI MARTI SA DE CV is a company founded in Guadalajara, Jalisco by Lic. Adrián López Arriaga López Velarde from Aguascalientes, Ags. and Lic. Marte Arturo Cázarez Duarte, originally from Culiacán, Sinaloa, who met in Taipei, Taiwan in 2011 when Adrián was cursing his higher studies at Tamkang University Lanyang Campus his degree in Politics and Global Economy and Marte the Mandarin Chinese language in Fu-Jen University who later, after one year, returned to the city of Guadalajara to study at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores Tecnológico de Monterrey for a degree in International Business.

Both went through a year of cultural exchange through the Rotary Club in Taiwan before meeting in different years. Adrián from 2008 to 2009 in Nantou, Shuei-li and Marte province from 2009 to 2010 in the capital city.

At the end of his studies, Adrián worked in the furniture industry in Taiwan for three years and Marte in the fashion industry in Mexico for 3 years. Adrián decided to return to Mexico seeking to return to his roots, where he found the opportunity to serve for a Taiwanese group in the Automotive Industry in Zapopan, Jalisco as an interpreter of Mandarin Chinese, English and Spanish while Marte was still working in the fashion industry in Guadalajara. Both, living practically in the same city, coexisted again and that was where the brainstorming began that today is crystallized in the founding of ADRIANO DI MARTI SA DE CV and in the successful development of the first vegan leather made in México (DESSERTO) which is highly sustainable, made from nopal and whose quality allows it to be an attractive alternative for industries such as leather goods, footwear, automotive and aeronautics.

The idea of creating a highly sustainable material but at the same time complying with the standards demanded by these industries was born after corroborating, based on their previous work experience, the urgent need to offer a material whose environmental footprint was less than that of today They have the different inputs of materials such as animal leather and synthetic skins. During the brainstorming, it was necessary to look for a raw material of organic origin which was viable to supply the great demands demanded by these industries, which did not require a great use of water or energy to obtain and whose cultivation was abundant, free of pesticides and of little care, for this reason it was decided to use the nopal, which meets all the characteristics that were sought and that as if that were not enough is a national symbol of Mexico and a plant whose presence extends throughout the world. .

They were two years of intense research and development and with our own resources to successfully integrate, without compromising the aesthetic, physical, technical and mechanical characteristics of the material, the synthetic and organic chemical matter in a harmonious way that managed to obtain a quality material and highly sustainable which today we know as Desserto.

Patrick is one of the early birds in sustainable packaging. He has been in this field of work since 2000 when he started as a sales manager for Natura. After his time at Natura Patrick worked as an entrepreneur in compostable and sustainable packaging. In 2009 he started Bio4pack together with the Sylvaphane Group. His mission is to change the world of packaging into a sustainable branch. In order to achieve this, he’s always looking for new materials to replace traditional packaging for sustainable and/or compostable packaging. He also advises companies in the transition to using sustainable packaging.

Patrick is founding member of the Holland Bioplastics – a Dutch organisation to promote the use of bioplastics in the Netherlands, which shares knowledge and connects parties around bioplastics.

With more than 10 years’ experience in greenhouse gas accounting and sustainability assessment from farm/forest to end-product, Nicola leads the Chemicals and Polymers sector at RSB. Working closely with businesses across supply chains, Nicola is responsible for implementing RSB’s robust standards and certification system to enable the transition from a fossil-based economy to a sustainable bio-based and circular economy. Prior to joining RSB, Nicola provided technical sustainability consultancy services to clients including the World Bank, Rainforest Alliance, The Coca Cola Company and L’Oreal, and spent time working in Guyana and Costa Rica. Nicola holds an MSc (distinction) in Environmental Technology from Imperial College, London.

Markus heads Novozymes’ Protein Ingredients Venture and seeks to make the switch to a sustainable diet effortless for the average consumer. Markus holds a PhD in chemistry from Aarhus University and is pursuing a master’s degree in business development from Copenhagen Business School. The last decade Markus has worked in front-end innovation, new product and business development in various roles at Danisco DuPont and Novozymes in Denmark and the USA. He is married, with 3 kids and lives in the outskirts of Copenhagen.

Kirstin Knufmann has always been all-around interested and always wanted a little bit more! She was born 1980 in Frechen near cologne and did an apprenticeship in the real estate sector till she decided to go a different path. She started her studies in photography in cologne and Barcelona. After that she lived and worked in Munich, New York and L.A. as fashion and celebrity photographer.

She made her first experience with raw-food in the United States. After that she was immediately hooked to this kind of nutrition and dieting but at the same time wondering why this kind of nutrition wasn’t a thing in the rest of the world. She was so passionate about it that she created her own recipes and became more and more an expert in raw food. 2010 she started her first own business “PureRaw” in the Altmark and 2013 she released her first own raw-food cooking book “Raw! Meine raffinierte Rohkostküche” ( Raw! My fancy raw food kitchen ) with the Christian publisher. Since this time PureRaw became the market leader for superfoods and raw-vegan products.

Kirstin Knufmann is now one of the most popular speakers for raw food and inspires
more and more people with fun and enjoyment for this different kind of dieting.

2016 she released together with her husband Jörg Ullmann the book “Algen – das gesunde Gemüse aus dem Meer” (Algae – the healthy vegetable from the sea) and the Kosmos publisher, which got the gold medal from GAD in the same year. She and her husband are showing in this book with beautiful recipes and tips the huge variety of algae and the great opportunities for the kitchen.2015/2016 She was the face of the image campaign “Die Altmark. Grüne Wiese mit Zukunft” (The Altmark. Green meadow with a future) in her region. She chose Klötze in the Altmark as a location for the PureRaw factory to create jobs and to make her
region a bit more attractive.

Algae are capitalized at Knufmann. As food of the future they will become necessary and inevitable for us. Knufmann recognized this early on and initiated the hitherto unique innovation forum “AlgaeFood” – Potentials and Limits of Algae as Food, which was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and continued
in a sustainable network structure.
With its unique product “BOBEI baking without butter and egg” (based on specially fermented chlorella microalgae), Knufmann was honored with the top-class Hugo Junkers Award in 2018.
In 2018 Knufmann was honored as a cultural and creative pilot of the Federal Republic of Germany.

In 2019, the internationally acclaimed Bauhaus celebrates “100 years Bauhaus”. The birthplace of this pioneering and innovative direction lies in Dessau (Saxony-Anhalt) and has set milestones in all areas worldwide and has become an incontrovertible concept. Knufmann is part of this campaign of the currently most important lateral and further thinkers for the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Sandrine Lauret is Account Director at Hague Corporate Affairs and Policy Manager of the European Alliance for Plant-based Foods (EAPF), where she leads the advocacy committee. EAPF is a multi-stakeholder alliance gathering food producers, NGOs, consumers, nutritionists and researchers to promote plant-based foods for the transition towards more sustainable food systems. With a background in European Affairs and Political Strategy, Sandrine Lauret has more than 10 years of experience in public affairs in Brussels. She has worked for European trade associations and consultancies, specialising in food, circular economy and sustainability policies. 

I earned my PhD at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in 1997 on chemoenzymatic acylation of carbohydrates for the synthesis of biodegradable polymers. I was awarded NSERC and KOSEF fellowships from Canada and Korea. in 1998 I did my postdoc at Institute of Food Research, Reading UK (with Dr. Evgeny vulfson and Prof. Herbert Holland) and in 1999 as research associate at Rensselaer Polytech Institute (with Prof Jonathan Dordick). From 2000 to 2007 I was senior research scientist at LG Chem R&D Park, involved in the development of enzymatic processes for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. From 2011 to 2019 I was associate processor at Yanbian University of Science and Technology. From March 2019 to March 2020 I worked at Shema developing electrospun nanofibers for facial masks. April,2020 I joined Lignum as Chief Marketing & Innovation Officer for new business development.  

Graduated from Institute of Chemical Technology Prague – Biochemical Technology (1975 MSc, 1988 PhD). Technical and Sales Director of INOTEX Ltd., (Czech) innovation and technology transfer company specialized in textile (bio)chemistry and (multi)functional textiles. Experienced in coordination of national and international R&D projects – some of them related to new bio-based/enzymatic textile cleaner processing, waste-less natural fibre (flax, hemp…) utilization and bio-modification of synthetic fibres.

Regina is Partner at Blue Horizon Ventures, a food technology fund that aims to support and promote a positive global impact on the environment, human health and animal welfare. Regina has many years of experience in business and science and worked for Evolva, Hoffmann-La Roche, Bank Vontobel, The University Children’s Hospital Zurich and the Max Planck Institute, Germany. She holds a PhD in Molecular & Cell Biology from the University of Zurich, a Master in Biotechnology Management from the IE Business School in Madrid, a Master of Engineering in Biotechnology and is certified in Plant-Based Nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies. Being a long-term vegan herself, Regina is passionate about accelerating the movement towards a more sustainable and just food system through innovation, technology and entrepreneurship.

After graduating as a bioprocess engineer from the Free University of Brussels in 1986, I started my career as a research assistant at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry (CHIS) at the same university. Subsequently, I switched to an assignment at the Department of Applied Engineering of the Universities of Antwerp and Mechelen. Later, I completed a PhD in the research group Biochemical Process Technology & Control (BioTeC) at KU Leuven. During my PhD (2008-2013), I also started a research lab at Artesis University College Antwerp on the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into chemicals using enzymes and microorganisms. After the integration at the University of Antwerp in 2015, this was continued.

Currently, I lead the research on Industrial Biotechnology in the research group Biochemical Waste Water Valorisation and Engineering (BioWAVE) at the University of Antwerp. In our research, we make use of lignocellulosic streams from the agricultural and food industry, including the resulting wastewater.  The raw materials are converted for the production of materials such as ethanol, lactic acid, pigments, long-chain fatty acids, mannosylerythritol lipids, microbial oil, …… Here, eco-efficient processes are designed and optimised based on both the pre-treatment of the raw material and the biocatalyst applied, as well as the process conditions and applied reactor technology using biochemical engineering and modelling techniques.

Josie Morris BA (Hons), MA is Managing Director and a shareholder of The Wool Packaging Company Limited – Woolcool. Woolcool produce insulated packaging using Sheep Wool as a sustainable alternative to Polystyrene. This year saw Woolcool achieve B Corp certification, promoting business as a force for good, an ethos Josie is passionate about. Josie is an advocate for diversity and the development strong cultures within businesses.  As well as being involved in the BBIA for the past 3 years, she also sits on the Board of Stafford Chambers of Commerce and has been invited to speak at various events, sharing her thoughts on sustainability and business impact, including at the Staffordshire LEP’s (Local Education Partnership) Annual Conference & the Plastic Free World Conference. She has also been involved in a number of roundtables with UK Members of Parliament, feeding back on local and national issues. Josie is a champion of Small to Medium Business Enterprises (SMEs) and is currently one of DiT Export

Jeroen van Dorp has a background in organic chemistry and gained experience with biobased chemicals at DSM and Corbion. Now in charge of business development at ChainCraft, he is working on next generation biobased chemicals, produced from organic waste. ChainCraft operates a unique fermentation technology, yielding medium chain fatty acids for use in feed, food and various other applications. Jeroen’s personal and professional life are connected via fermentation, as he also enjoys producing a good batch of beer, kimchi or kombucha at home.

Based on his strong systems thinking skills, Jan delivers strategic consultancy projects aiming to transform industrial processes to shape sustainable futures. As a project director he delivers projects of outstanding quality through collaboration and a fully integrated advisory approach. He is highly valued by his Clients for his skills as an integrator between strategic aspiration and the economic, ecologic and social context of the project.

Jan worked as an apprentice for a glazier’s and joiner’s workshop before he started his architecture studies at the Technical University of Aachen (RWTH), where he became an assistant professor for the Chair of Structural Design and the director of the glass research group. Jan started his career at Arup as a façade designer and material specialist in 2015 at the company’s headquarter in London. Since 2008 he is based in Berlin leading Foresight, Research & Innovation in Germany, leading also the firm’s Research and Innovation Portfolio in Europe, maintaining a strong network with public and private partners in the field of urban resource management. 

Jan holds the position of Arup’s Materials Skillnetwork Leader in Europe closely linked to Arup’s Resource and Waste Community and is recognized internationally as an expert for selection of sustainable materials and systems and for re-thinking the supply and value chain of industries to maximize the value of materials along their full Life Cycle.

Being an architect with a deep technical understanding of the building process and products, Jan has steered a number of successful product developments exploring the potential of bio-based processes and materuals for construction.. The BioBuild project was awarded with the JEC Innovation Award 2015 and the SolarLeaf Façade won the Zumtobel Group Award for Applied Innovations 2014 and the Detail Produktpreis 2015. Currently Jan leads a product development with bio tech start-up mogu to bring a cladding system with mycelium panels on the European market.

Jan enjoys lecturing and teaching, he has delivered key-notes on the subject of collaborative innovations, integrated circular design strategies across the globe. His previous teaching commitments include a role as professor on Global Sustainability and Environment for CIEE in Berlin. Jan is jury member for international design Competition if field of “Sustainability and Circularity”, eg for the SDE 2019 in Hungary.

Supporting SME’s and Startups in Germany to make the food system more sustainable, healthy and trusted!

In her current position as Business Creation Manager for EIT Food she supports and connects early stage entrepreneurs and tech-savy Agtech and Food startups in Germany within the EIT Food partner network and beyond. As a former startup consultant for Vienna Business Agency and trained EU Fundraiser and project manager, she’s an expert in public funding instruments and experienced in guiding startups through the administrational jungle. 

Stefan studied general Engineering Science at the Hamburg University of technology and focussed on bio-process Engineering in his master. Finished in 2020 he already joined the team of LignoPure in early 2019 with the succesful founding of the company in late 2019. Participating in the YesDelft! validation lab he learned valuable lessons of how to communicate with customers and sharpening the business idea.

Iris Lewandowski holds the chair of “Biobased Resources in the Bioeconomy” at the University of Hohenheim. Here she initiated the international master programme “Bioeconomy”, of which she is in charge, and is editor of an open access textbook on the bioeconomy. On Juli 2018 she was appointed to Chief Bioeconomy Officer (CBO) of the University of Hohenheim. Presently, she is Scientific speaker of the European Bioeconomy University (EBU), an alliance of six leading European Universities in the field of the knowledge-based bioeconomy.

Thierry Audibert has a background in Chemistry and Perfume Creations. He held various positions and started from been trained as Creative Perfumer in Hong Kong and Paris, designing fragrances for the Consumer Products. 

He we moved into Sales before becoming the World Account Manager for a major Global customer. 

In 2009, Thierry was appointed as Head of Fragrance Research covering new Ingredients, novel manufacturing Process, Fragrance Encapsulation and the Health and Wellness platform. In that role, Thierry contributed to developing Givaudan Fragrance Biotechnology expertise. 

Today, as Head of New Business Development for the Fragrance Division, he covers M&A activities within core and adjacent Business fields. 

Christian works on the commercialization of start-up companies, as well as on how to use internal cross-functionality to promote a given project. Furthermore, Christian works on innovative networking and the application of commercial tools for each project team. Christian holds a master’s degree in the management of innovation and business development from Copenhagen Business School, and has since worked with early stage projects at Novozymes, scouting and collaborating with start-ups and incubators on a global scale. Christian also holds Board position in a number of Synthetic Biology Startups

Africa owns a degree in Translation and Culture studies with a Chinese Mayor by the Autonomous University of Madrid (ES) and an MBA by ICEX-CECO and UIMP (ES). She also took business and language courses at Peking University (China) and worked in the Agri-food Promotion Department of the Commercial and Economic Office of the Embassy of Spain in Beijing (China).

At Innovarum, she oversees communication and marketing strategies. Besides, she develops and implements Dissemination and Communication Plans and actions for the EU projects in which Innovarum has an active communication role. Throughout her educational and professional international experience, she’s built up a great passion for communication, content creation, business development, digital marketing and creative processes.

Tom Cooke joins Algenesis from Reef, where he was VP of Product for 7 years. He was responsible for Reef’s global product line strategy and execution including product management, design, and development. Prior to Reef, Tom spent 16 years at Vans where he held numerous roles in Product Management and Development, most recently as the Director of Footwear for the Core Channel, which included Syndicate, Pro Skate, Surf and OTW footwear lines. Tom holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Virginia.

Laura has experience in Project Management, International Business Development and Marketing Project Management in various industries, mostly in the Food sector and Biotechnology. Prior to Arbiom, she worked for Remy Cointreau’s Food department as a Brand Ambassador in South Korea. She earned a Master’s degree in International Management at Lumière University Lyon 2 and a Bachelor’s degree in Management Sciences at Paris Nanterre University.

Christopher Kong is the co-founder and Head of Business Development of Better Nature, the UK’s leading all-natural meat alternatives brand and one of the most exciting food-tech startups in the field of fermentation. Else-Jasmijn Hassing is a PhD candidate in Delft University of Technology in the area of metabolic engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for the production of valuable aromatic compounds. She holds a Master of Science in Life, Science and Technology.

Tristan Rossignol is a Senior Researcher at the MICALIS Institute at INRAE, France. His research focus is in metabolic engineering and systems biology of the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica, with an emphasis on lipid metabolism and the development of metabolic engineering tools. His lab develops applications on biolipids and enzyme production.

Verena Siewers is a Senior Researcher at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. She obtained a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Münster, Germany and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Technical University of Denmark. Her research is focused on yeast synthetic biology and metabolic engineering.

Florian David holds an engineering degree and a PhD degree in Biotechnology. He has 12 years experience in the fields of Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology and has coordinated projects ranging from strain development and synthetic biology tool development, to bioprocess optimization and downstream processing. Florian is a Co-founder and CSO of Biopetrolia, and is responsible for advancing Biopetrolia’s scientific strategy.

John Morrissey leads the Yeast Biotechnology Group at University College Cork, Ireland. His major research focus is on generating knowledge and developing technology to aid the application of yeasts in food and industrial biotechnology. Areas of interest include yeast physiology, metabolism and gene regulation, as well as the application of genome engineering and synthetic biology strategies to engineer industrial yeast species for biotechnology. John has leadership roles in the Microbiology Society, the European Federation of Biotechnology, and the International Commission on Yeasts and is also Editor in Chief of FEMS Yeast Research, the yeast community journal.

Life sciences and Sustainable technologies are flagships of the  Strategy for Economy and Innovation of the City of Vienna. Emerging technologies are crucial to make Vienna fit for the future as a business location and to cope with current challenges such as COVID 19 and the climate crises. The Vienna Business Agency and it´s life science initiative LISAvienna offer services, financing and R&I infrastructure to boost innovation projects of Viennese companies. Charlotte Sode is Head of Sector for Bioeconomy within the Directorate General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission in Brussels. She joined the European Commission in 2007, and worked in the Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development on Direct Payments, as Head of Sector for Arable Crops and for the Common Agricultural Policy Budget for Direct Payments. While working as Head of Sector in the Danish Agricultural Agency, she represented Denmark in EU work related to the Common Agricultural Policy. She has a BA and Cand.Mag Degree in French from the University of Copenhagen and the BSc degree in Agricultural Economics from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University.

Michael brings over a decade of global experience as a growth investor, technology executive and sustainability entrepreneur. His previous experience includes European technology investing at Hg, as Founding CFO at GRIDSERVE delivering ultra-fast EV charging, solar and battery storage projects, leading private equity backed transformations to Platinum Equity at Vertiv in industrial technology and Advent at Unit 4 in enterprise software and at the Boston Consulting Group as a core member of the Energy and industrials practice areas.

Michael holds Bachelor of Engineering and Masters of Project Management degrees, both with first class honours and an MBA from Harvard Business School where he was Co-President of the Energy and Environment club and graduated with high distinction as a Baker Scholar.

He lives in London with his wife and two young sons, is a long-term electric vehicle, renewable energy and green building enthusiast and especially enjoys working with millennial entrepreneurs building sustainability and technology ventures alongside spending time with his young family.

Leslie Johnston launched Laudes Foundation as its first Chief Executive Officer in January 2020, bringing over 20 years of management experience across multiple sectors. At Laudes Foundation, she is leading the development of its initial vision, strategy and operating model to deliver on its aspiration for global markets that value all people and respect nature. Previously, she headed C&A Foundation as its Executive Director, repositioning it as a global catalyst to make fashion a force for good.

Based on more than 30 years experience in chemical industry and bioeconomy Manfred Kircher works on regional as well as international bioeconomy strategies. 

His career milestones are biotechnological research and development (Degussa AG, Germany), production (Fermas s.r.o.; Slovakia), venture capital (Burrill & Company; USA) and biotechnology partnering and branding (Evonik Industries AG; Germany).  In 2014 he founded KADIB. Since 2014 he chairs the Advisory Board of CLIB-Cluster (Cluster Industrielle Biotechnologie). Niklas has a Doctor of Science degree in biotechnology from Aalto University in Finland. He has also studied economics and innovation strategies. His job career begun in 1999, when he took on the position of Research Scientist at Cultor Technology Center. He has since hold the positions of Project Manager, Team Leader, Program Manager, Technology Manager and Vice President for Research at Aalto University, VTT, CLIC Innovation and Metsä Fibre, respectively. He is currently CEO of Metsä Spring, Metsä Group’s innovation company. Niklas is currently also a Board member of the Bio-based Industries Consortium, the private partner of the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking, and of the startup Woodio.

Sebastian Blum is European Sales Director at m2p-labs, a microbioreactor company focusing on microreaction and automated solutions for screening and bioprocess development. For 9 years, he is building up his network in the life science sector and supports scientists in international research and development departments to efficiently conduct microbial experiments.

Before he started his sales career, he graduated from the Heinrich-Heine-University in Düsseldorf with a Diploma in Biology.

When not traveling, Sebastian enjoys gardening and spending time with his family.

James Gaffey is Co-Director of the Circular Bioeconomy Research Group (CIRCBIO) at Shannon Applied Biotechnology Centre in Institute of Technology Tralee. James is Principal Investigator on the BBI JU ICT-BIOCHAIN and BIOSWITCH projects and academic collaborator in the BiOrbic SFI Bioeconomy Research Centre. He is currently coordinator of the EIP-Agri Biorefinery Glas, small-scale grass biorefinery demonstration project and part of the BIORBIC-led SFI Zero Farm C team. Additional new projects include H2020s COOPID and AgroBridges. James is part of the core programme development team and lecturer on the Postgraduate Diploma in Bioeconomy with Business co-developed by IT Tralee, UCD and Teagasc. He has been a regular contributor to European-level studies into circular bioeconomy and is currently a member of the Expert Panel for the Impact Assessment of the European Partnership for a Circular Biobased Europe under the future Horizon Europe programme. James joined IT Tralee in 2016, working as biorefinery specialist on the EU Horizon 2020 AgriForValor Project. Prior to this, James worked in the biorefinery industry since 2009 with Sustainable Biopolymers, Cellulac Ltd and the Technology Centre for Biorefining and Bioenergy (NUI Galway) and through projects including Bio-Eire, Future European League for Microalgal Energy (FUEL4ME) and Sustainable Polymers from Algae Sugars and Hydrocarbons (SPLASH).

Wouter van Winden holds a MSc degree in Bioprocess Technology of Wageningen University, The Netherlands. He obtained a PhD degree in the field of metabolic engineering of micro-organisms at Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. He then worked as an assistant professor metabolomics at the same university from 2002-2007. Since 2007, Wouter has been working at the DSM Biotechnology Center in Delft, The Netherlands, as fermentation scientist. He was involved in development and large-scale implementation of new fermentation processes, as well as optimization of existing ones. His focus areas are fermentation technology, process modelling and data analysis, and science management. He currently holds the position of principal scientist fermentation. He is married, with 3 kids and lives in The Hague, The Netherlands.

Nicole Rawling is co-founder and Executive Director of the Material Innovation Initiative (MII), a nonprofit working to accelerate the development of next generation sustainable materials for the fashion, automotive, and home goods industries, with a focus on replacing animal-based materials. Nicole is an experienced manager and a lawyer with over 13 years of experience advising corporations and nonprofit groups on legal, finance, human resources, and management issues. As the director of international engagement at the Good Food Institute, she built the organization’s five international programs and oversaw all international operations and strategy. She worked with scientists, entrepreneurs, companies, investors, and governments all over the world to help create the plant-based food revolution. She now uses her extensive experience to move materials into an animal-free future at MII.

Matthias Slatner studied Biotechnology at the University of Life Sciences (BOKU) Vienna, and did his Master Thesis at Escola Superior Biotechnologia in Porto, Portugal. He did his PhD in the field of enzyme technology at BOKU. After his PhD he worked as production manager and plant manager in the food industry, bevor he returned to research 2018. Presently he is innovation manager of the Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology. He is responsible for the open innovation strategy of acib. Private Matthias Slatner is voluntary fire fighter.

She works on EC strategies and policies supporting research projects in EU in the field of bio-based industrial sectors, with a special focus on the environmental sustainability challenges of supply chains and value chains in those sectors.

Dr. Georg Schirrmacher is Managing Director of the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) Food Co-Location Center (CLC) Central in Munich/Freising.

EIT Food’s mission is to catalyse the transformation of the food system and effectively meet the global food sector demands of present and future generations by building, managing and empowering a sustainable and trusted multi-stakeholder community with a central role for the consumer. CLC Central contributes to the overall objectives of EIT Food by strong involvement of highly complementary academic and business partners as well as by guaranteeing a broad outreach via its network partners. CLC Central offers a fertile environment to boost consumer-driven, game-changing innovation taking an integral value chain perspective.

Before joining EIT Food Georg Schirrmacher was Head of Science Network Management at Clariant, a globally leading specialty chemicals company. He was responsible for Clariant’s scientific cooperation network, fulfilled the function of a global consultant being the main contact for scientific and technical cooperation and was responsible for public funding.

Until end of June 2018 Georg Schirrmacher was chairman of the BIC Programming Working Group, an industrial working group on the subject of bioeconomy in Brussels. The BIC represents the private part of the public-private partnership “Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU)”, which was launched in 2012 together with the EU and is one of the pillars of the European bioeconomy strategy.

Prior to joining the industry in 2009, he was personal advisor (Referent) for Strategy and Industrial Cooperation to the President of the Technical University of Munich Prof. Wolfgang A. Herrmann.

Thomas Jonas is Co-Founder and CEO of Nature’s Fynd. Nature’s Fynd is a groundbreaking food tech company born out of NASA-supported research on extremophiles from Yellowstone National Park. Eben Bayer, Co-Founder of Ecovative Design, leads the biomaterials company to grow high performance, premium, award-winning products that are safe, healthy, and certified sustainable. Bayer, who grew up working on his family’s Vermont farm, is a pioneer in leveraging mycelium—”nature’s glue”—in Mushroom® Materials to drive sustainable innovation in the industrial sector. Eben uses biology to solve important environmental challenges by leading Ecovative to grow safe and healthy new materials as well as envisioning creative ways to use natural technology at industrial scales and in consumer applications. Eben shares his vision for a future powered by biology around the world, including presentations at TED Global, PopTech, and Davos. Eben has led Ecovative to be widely recognized including as a World Economic Forum Tech Pioneer, a U.S.EPA Environmental Quality Award winner, and Buckminster Fuller Institute socially responsible design designee. Bayer is the primary inventor on more than 10 patents published in over 30 countries. Nate is an investor at Blue Horizon, the leading multi-stage investment firm focused on alternative proteins.  He previously worked as the Startup Growth Specialist at the Good Food Institute where he drafted the three flagship state of the industry reports on plant-based, cell-based, and fermentation-enabled meat, eggs, and dairy. He is also the author of the eco-biotechnology newsletter, Fifth Industrial, and previously worked at a university-affiliated biotechnology incubator.

Dr May is Senior Science Fellow for Biochemistry and Microbiology at DSM and scientifically responsible for Biotech developments within DSM Nutritional Products. Before he held various positions as Competence Manager, Corporate Scientist and R&D Director within different DSM businesses. He joined DSM in 2006 after a 6 years career at Degussa AG (now Evonik Industries). Between 1998 and 2000 he did a postdoc at the California Institute of Technology in the group of Prof. F.H. Arnold on directed evolution of enzymes. He received his PhD from the University of Stuttgart where he studied Technical Biology.

DVM in veterinary medicine in 1996. After university, he was working for 3 years in biotechnology at the Veterinary University in Vienna and for about 4 years in the Austrian Medicine Agency, when he also joined the Biotechnology Working Party of the European Medicine Agency. Since 2003, Wolfgang Gelbmann has been joining the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) working on biological hazards and health claims. Since 2006 he is was mainly coordinating the EFSA Working Groups on Novel Foods assessing Novel Food applications.

Takis joined the European Commission in 1996. Since February 2017, he joined the Food Processing Technologies and Novel Food Unit of the Health and Food Safety Directorate General (DG SANTE) and is responsible for Novel Foods and Nanotechnology and Research Coordination. 

He joined DG SANTE in 1998 and has held previous positions in the area of consumer safety, risk assessment, the Commission Scientific Committees, eHealth, health policy, relations with the European Food Safety Authority, and Biotechnology.

Takis Daskaleros was trained as a medical microbiologist, molecular biologist, and toxicologist.

Sara Oliveira, a Research Engineer of the Food Processing and Nutrition Group at the INL (International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, Portugal), holds a Biomedical Engineering MSc and Bioengineering Systems PhD (MIT-Portugal Program). Sara counts with 7 years of research experience in tissue engineering and biomaterials, working with 3D printing technology since 2010, and nearly 4 years in applications of 3D food printing in food technology (e.g., low shear inks, oleo -inks, 3D design to boost the bioactivity of baked foods).

Her current research focuses mainly on producing structured edible inks for multiscale 3D printed structures with improved functionality and advanced properties.

She is the principal investigator of the M3atD project – a 3D bioprinted model for cell-based meats design, granted by the Good Food Institute in 2020. The project aims at understanding how 3D food bioprinting can improve the texture of cultivated meat. She co-authored the first scientific report on cultivated meat – (“You are what of Meat”; Massive Science, 2018), sponsored by the New Harvest. Sara spoke on 3D Food printing and its application in cultivated meat in the Cultured Meat and Future Food Podcast (2018). Recently, as a co-guest editor of the Special Issue “Bio-based Additive Manufacturing in Food and Tissue Engineering” in the Journal Polymers, she aims to foster the interface between these complementary fields essential for the success of 3D printed cultivated meat or other bio-based 3D foods.

In other research-related activities, Sara is the author of a number of high-impact publications in tissue and food engineering, IP request, communications, participated in outreach activities, has been granted several awards, and has been supervising students.

In his role as CEO, Krijn guides Meatable’s strategic direction.

Before founding Meatable together with Daan Luining, he worked for 6 years at management consulting firm McKinsey & Company, where he cultivated the expertise in strategy development and operations.

After leaving the company he planned to take a year off, but he quickly met Daan and together they founded Meatable. Through Meatable, Krijn is realizing his ambition to contribute to several of the biggest challenges of his generation.

Blake leads GFI’s efforts to map out white space in the alternative protein industry and advise the high-potential entrepreneurs, business professionals, and scientists who will fill those gaps. A former strategy consultant, advisor to an institute for regenerative medicine, and health policy enthusiast, Blake is keen to harvest the next crop of companies that are unambiguously good for our planet and palate. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Public Health and a minor in Entrepreneurship.

After getting his PhD in Biotechnology (1988) from the Agricultural University in Wageningen (The Netherlands), Will joined DSM in the Netherlands. During his 30+ years at DSM, he held various international management positions in Research, Business Development and Business Management. Under his leadership multiple sustainable biobased processes were commercialized (e.g. fine chemicals for pharma, semi-synthetic antibiotics, bio-succinic, and canola protein).
Early 2020 Will joined Those Vegan Cowboys as Project Director. Those Vegan Cowboys, is a novel initiative of the founders of The Vegetarian Butcher (sold at the end of 2018 to Unilever). The aim of Those Vegan Cowboys is to sustainably produce milk proteins and their corresponding dairy products by efficient microbial fermentation processes.

Jo joined the FAIRR Initiative in October 2017. She manages its collaborative engagements with global food companies, including the development of evaluation frameworks for the market-leading engagement on protein diversification. She is responsible for the analysis and evaluation of retailers and brand manufacturers and also works closely with investor members to develop and integrate sustainable food systems as a key priority.

Prior to this, she was an Assistant-Manager at KPMG UK in their Investment Management and Funds Team, advising investment managers on risk management as well as working cross-functionally with the Sustainability Team on climate change risk for private equity firms. Jo began her career with Alliance Trust as an analyst.

Belgin is Cargill’s Starchy business European Segment Leader for Renewability and Enrichment including plant proteins. Her 23-year career spans across several senior roles in Strategy, Mergers & Acquisitions, Finance, Commercial leadership and General Management.  She served diverse industries in B2B and B2C spaces while accumulating experiences by living in Europe, USA and Asia-Pacific.

Angela Morris ran her own creative packaging design businesses for over 30 years and is now CEO of The Wool Packaging Company and founder of the Woolcool® brand. Angela’s packaging experience covers a variety of different sectors, from major UK retail high street stores such as Next, global confectionery companies Nestlé and Cadbury’s, to water filtration systems for Fairey Industrial Ceramics and automotive components for Roll-Royce.

While Angela was engaged as a packaging consultant with the National Trust in 2002, using pure sheep wool as a superior and genuinely compostable insulated packaging material was first conceived. By 2007 the ‘Green Agenda’ had become a major focus globally and potential food industry customers saw wool-based packaging as an environmentally friendly option for delivering their fresh and frozen perishable foodstuffs direct to the consumer via Internet mail order. Woolcool was recognised with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category in 2018 and achieved BCorp Status in February 2020.

Recently Angela’s continuing focus for her company has been on the Research and Development of wool and other natural fibres and materials into insulation for the packaging and transportation of temperature sensitive products. These properties are being optimized to develop innovative and effective cold chain solutions for the global Pharmaceutical sector, ultimately these solutions will save human lives.

Jennifer Lewis Executive Director at International Biocontrol Manufacturers Association (IBMA) and Director of Byardbridge Consultancy Ltd a sustainable development consultancy. IBMA is a trade association representing the manufacturers of Biocontrol solutions and has a wide range of members to enrich the association. A large percentage of IBMA members are Small, Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Enya Gomes Clynch is a recent MEng graduate from the Department of Biochemical Engineering, University College London. Her final year was spent in industry at biotech company Sartorius, where she developed sensors for small scale high throughput bioreactors. She has previously conducted research into the biorefinery of spent coffee grounds for biofuel production and presented her findings in Parliament. Enya has been an active member of the Bioladies since the beginning of her studies and is keen to start her career within biotechnology.

Dr Brenda Parker is a Lecturer in Sustainable Bioprocess Design at the Department of Biochemical Engineering, University College London. She is the co-founder of the Bio-Integrated Design Lab, an interdisciplinary research group, merging biotechnology and the built environment. She is one of the original bioladies, and her specialism is how algae can be used for green chemistry and bioremediation.  

Dr Chris Holland is a Researcher and Senior Lecturer in the department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield. He leads the Natural Materials Group (www.naturalmaterialsgroup.com). He studied Biology at Oxford University and had great fun studying silk for his D.Phil in the Oxford Silk Group under the supervision of the original spiderman, Prof. Fritz Vollrath. He now has his own group which is a collection of scientists with different backgrounds, cultures and questions surrounding how nature makes her materials (from spider silk to snail slime). Outside the lab, he leads the University Engineering Faculty REF Impact submission, has a keen interest in commercialisation of research (having recently cofounded a spin-out company) is an Associate Editor for ACS Biomaterials Science and Engineering and Chair of the IoM3 Natural Materials Association.

Agnieszka is an effective research and development enabler with a strong focus on sustainability and bioeconomy. An engaging speaker and enthusiastic listener, she advocates involvement in research initiatives and presents research content to a variety of audiences. Agnieszka is experienced in research and development facilitation, providing technical consultancy, business development and programme and project management services to a wide range of clients including SMEs and large multinationals.

Iris Aquilina Anderson is a passionate and proactive champion of the bioeconomy, with 38 years of policy, business and research experience. She has represented the UK in bio, agriculture, energy and sustainability issues.. She has expertise on diversity and inclusion, setting up and leading staff networks and staff development through networking, mentoring and coaching.  Ambassador for BBIA, a UK trade association promoting the bioeconomy; board member of the Natural Materials Association, part of IOM3; evaluator for BBI JU. She mentors start-ups and SMEs and works on knowledge transfer. In 2016 she founded the Bioladies Network.

I have worked for 14 years at DSM in several managerial functions at R&D and innovation in the field of biotech food ingredients. My current position is to transform the industrial site of DSM in Delft to an open innovation campus welcoming startups, scaleups and grownups in industrial biotech. We recently founded a non-profit organization with 5 partners along the triple helix called Planet B.io. Prof. Irina Borodina directs a research group on Yeast Metabolic Engineering at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, Technical University of Denmark (DTU) https://www.biosustain.dtu.dk/Research/Research-Groups/Yeast-Metabolic-Engineering. Her research focuses on advancing the methodologies for metabolic engineering of yeast cell factories for the sustainable production of bulk and high-value chemicals. She received a Chemical Engineering degree from Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania in 2001 and a PhD degree in Biotechnology from DTU in 2007. Dr. Borodina has authored 57 peer-reviewed articles, which have been cited over 3,000 times, and she is co-inventor of 14 patent families. She is also co-founder and CTO of a start-up biotech company BioPhero that produces insect pheromones for environmentally friendly pest control (www.biophero.com). She received 2016 Jay Bailey Young Investigator Award in Metabolic Engineering, 2019 Equinor Prize, and was selected as a 2019 EU Women Innovator.

Dr. Stefan Jennewein studied Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Organic Chemistry at the Universities of Sussex (Brighton, UK), Zurich (CH), Tübingen (D) and Cambridge (UK), and at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (Munich, D). Dr. Stefan Jennewein also gained practical experience through his work at Washington State University (Pullman, USA), the company DSM N.V. (Delft, NL), the Technical University of Darmstadt (D), and the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology (Aachen, D).

Claus started his carrier in Novo Nordisk Enzyme Research Division. First as a scientist and project leader, then as a manager and since 2002 as Director/ Senior Director responsible for Novozymes Protein Chemistry Area. Worked with New Industry Development, the Food & Beverage ISG, then the Feed ISG and member of DSM-NP alliance mgt. team. Held responsibility for the R&D activities in Nottingham. In end of 2008 transferred to the US attaining responsibility for R&D efforts in Biomass and joined the Global R&D Leadership Team and the Fuel ISG and took over responsibility for Novozymes Inc. CA. From mid 2012 promoted to VP and took global responsibility for BioEnergy R&D worldwide incl. Starch Fuel and served the BioFuel and Biomass ISG’s. Since early 2016 Senior Vice President, heading up the Research & Technology organization (approx. 1000 employees) covering core technologies in Discovery, Development & Optimization of enzymes and micro-organisms as well as IP, Regulatory Affairs and Toxicology.

Since 1 April 2020, Kerstin Jorna is the Director-General of the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs.

Immediately prior to her current role, she was Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General (DG) for Economic and Financial Affairs. Before that, she was a Director for Single Market Policy, Regulation and Implementation, and for Industrial Property, Innovation and Standards at this DG, as well as a member of several cabinets in different policy areas.

Ms. Susanne Pedersen is the Assistant Director-General and the Head of the Investment Policy Solutions Division of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). She is responsible for providing technical support and services in green investment and policy via seven units. As a Member of the Statutory Executive Team of GGGI, she also oversees strategic planning, implementation and delivery of projects and programs in partner countries. 

Before joining GGGI, Ms. Pedersen served as the Managing Director of Climate-KIC Nordic and as a Member of the Executive Board of Europe’s largest public private partnership addressing climate change through innovation. She has more than 25 years of experience in catalyzing partnerships, technology transfer, innovation and advisory services in the environmental and climate change area. She has worked as a manager, board member and strategic advisor with P&L responsibility. She has set-up international daughter companies, established new functional and service areas, and managed large-scale teams and projects. 

Ms. Pedersen holds a B. Com. (HD – International Trade) from Copenhagen Business School and a MA in American Social Studies, minor in Economics from University of Copenhagen and UC Berkeley. 

Rob is a partner at Capricorn Partners, working in the Capricorn Sustainable Chemistry Fund (CSCF). CSCF invests in early and growth companies bringing sustainable technologies to market, albeit through feedstock, technology platform or products. CSCF has made 7 investments to date, Prolupin, Virovet, DMC-BIO,cLecta, Void Polymers, Zeopore and Blackbearcarbon, and is looking to add several more to the portfolio. Rob is a chemical engineer from Delft University in the Netherlands and has worked both in the corporate, strategy consulting and start-up world in chemicals, process and water technology. Rob has held business management positions with Akzo Nobel and Shell Chemicals, was a founder and CEO of KiOR in the US and worked as CEO for several other start-ups in chemicals and water technology. He is also an investor in CoolSeparations, HyVent and Reactor Resources EU and has board roles in several start-ups. Rob has followed the New Board Programme from Neyenrode Business University.

Stephanie has over 20 years’ commercial experience in the life science industry, having worked in operational, sales and marketing leadership roles to support product development and introduction, commercial launch planning and marketing content strategy. She has helped execute programmes to open new geographies and market opportunities within research, clinical, agricultural, pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. Previously she was the VP of Marketing and Sales at Cambridge Epigenetix, Global Commercial Director at Oxford Nanopore Technologies, and also held senior positions at Illumina, Applied Biosystems, Affymetrix and GE Healthcare (Amersham Pharmacia Biotech). She first began her career working on the Human Genome Project at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.

François de Bie is Senior Marketing and Supply Chain Director at Total Corbion PLA. In his job he supports partners and brand owners that want to capitalize on the benefits of bioplastics.

François holds a Master of Science degree in biomedical mechanical engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands. He graduated cum laude in the field of polymer technology at DSM Research.

Before joining Total Corbion PLA, François worked at Corbion, EconCore, Sabic and GE Plastics where he held various leadership positions in marketing, product management, pricing and sales. Building partnerships and new business development are his key areas of expertise.

In 2013, François was elected Chairman of the Board of European Bioplastics, a position he still holds. With over 70 members from across the value chain, it is the largest European association representing the bioplastics industry. Furthermore, François is a founding member of Holland Bioplastics association and Chairman of the European CN/TC411 committee that created the EU standard for measuring biobased content.

Karin Fleck is Founder and CEO of the Vienna Textile Lab, an innovative start-up that fabricates organic colours made from harmless naturally occurring bacteria in order to provide the most sustainable, wholesome and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional synthetic dyes. Working with partners in academia and designers, she is creating an unique solution for the second largest pollution problem in the industry. Fleck holds a PhD in Applied Chemistry from the RMIT (Melbourne, Australia) and a Master Degree in Analytic Chemistry from Vienna University of Technology. She began her career in the oil industry at OMV (Austria), and later transitioned to the energy sector working for Vattenfall in Germany and The Netherlands. When she took a break from the energy business she turned her focus to the natural dyes. She has presented her idea to the Climate Launchpad the world’s green business competition. Vienna Textile Lab won the First Place in the Austrian round, the Audience Award and the Third Place in the international Grand Final.

Carsten Hjort holds a PhD from the Technical University of Denmark in molecular biology (1990). He has been a Novozymes employee since 1990. As a scientist he has worked with development of the Aspergillus oryzae expression system for enzyme production and he has been the head of expression technology activities at Novozymes since 2000 with laboratories in Denmark, USA and Japan.

Paul, a biochemical engineer by training, has over 15 years’ experience of the biotech industry originally in large molecule pharmaceutical development and latterly with industrial biotechnology and food manufacture. Paul leads the development team within 3F BIO and is responsible for all R&D activities as well as overseeing the piloting and scale up work, originally with partners, and now within 3F BIO’s own pilot production facility in Glasgow.

Professor Kevin O Connor is a member of the school of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science and the Earth Institute at University College Dublin, Ireland. Professor Kevin O’ Connor is the founder of Bioplastech a university spin out company endeavouring to commercialise the conversion of residues and biobased resources to biodegradable polymers.
