Adam Burja is Head of Biotechnology for the newly formed dsm-firmenich. Bringing together two renowned science-led companies – Royal DSM and Firmenich – each with a long history of groundbreaking science and innovation.

As Head of Biotech, Adam leads a global team of Scientists, Engineers, and Technicians, who support the Research and Development needs of dsm-firmenich’s businesses: Perfumery & Beauty, Taste, Texture & Health, Animal Nutrition & Health, and Human Nutrition & Care by developing bio-based health, nutrition and beauty products and solutions. Further, together with other teams within the Science and Research organization, the team is responsible for delivering the short-, medium- and long-term innovation portfolio for these businesses and our extensive group of partners, customers, and collaborators; with the Biotechnology team operating across all stages of the innovation process, from ideation to realization, and focusses on improving existing products and processes, and development new ones.

During his 30+ year career, Adam has worked across the globe; founded start-ups (BioHydrogen) and worked for SMEs (Ocean Nutrition Canada and Codexis), and Multinationals (DuPont and BP) alike; before joining DSM in 2016. Holding both Synthetic Biology and Biomanufacturing roles throughout his career.  

As part of Biomanufacturing Parallel session at EFIB 2023 on Wednesday 25 October, Adam will share relevant details of dsm-firmenich’s experience in bioprocess development and implementation over the years and reflect on how we are already starting to see the positive effects of the recent (re)focusing on this critical enabler of the Bioeconomy in our Industry.
