Bioeconomy is a major driving force towards more sustainable industrial processes. Advancing EU Green Deal objectives as well as UN Sustainability Goals will lead to further demand of bio-based innovation in different industry sectors and application areas. Biotechnology provides tools for adapting and modifying the biological organisms, products, processes and systems found in nature to develop processes that are eco-efficient and products that are not only more profitable but also more environment-friendly. It is also providing an increasing range of tools for industry to continue improving cost and environmental performance beyond what could normally be achieved using conventional chemical technologies. Many stakeholders in science and industry are developing novel technologies in the field of industrial biotechnology to help establish bio-based processes and biorefineries. Those lay the ground for a circular bioeconomy and resource-efficient alternatives to a fossil-based industry. EFIB provides a platform to discuss latest trends and technologies as well as challenges and future prospects.
