Vienna Textile Lab produces dyes and pigments manufactured by microorganisms to substitute conventional synthetic dyes, which nowadays are entirely derived from crude oil and its components. We enable our customers to provide sustainable less toxic dyed clothes to their end customers. Natural processes allow us to efficiently combine sustainability, safety and performance in the production of textile dyes and pigments, and thus save water and energy as well as reducing the health and environmental impact.
Which input provides your business model/core technology towards a bio-based economy?
Vienna Textile Lab uses naturally occurring yeast, fungi and predominantly bacteria collected from soil, water and air, originating from our direct environment. We have access to a comprehensive library of microorganisms selected according to their chromogenic properties.
Which market/clients do you address and which short-/long-term goals do you have?
We believe that fashion companies, textile and fibre manufacturers, dye houses, chemical companies, and designers can profit from our technology. With numerous pilot projects with big industry players we aim to bring an anticipated change as a disruptor in the industry by setting up a new standard in the world of dyeing textiles as a powerful and competitive alternative to polluting colour petrochemicals. We help our customers to create and promote a fully sustainable product – from the fabric itself to the finishing dye.
What makes your approach unique compared to other stakeholders in this field?
Our uniqueness lies in cultivating a vast array of pigment producing microorganisms thanks to our large collection of natural occurring bacteria stems. We use environmentally friendly methods in relation to underutilized feedstocks and support a circular economy without genetically modified processing. Thanks to our growing strong partner network we have been able to achieve proof of concept with a variety of colours and fabrics. We’re committed to shifting to usage of less toxic chemicals by considering the health impact for the workers in the industry as well as for the end consumers (allergy prevention, reduction of toxic chemicals) as well as to sewage prevention and Co2 reduction.
